Tired of ugly, uncomfortable, and ill-fitting bras? Then this class is for you! We will guide you on a journey to create your own beautiful bra. Learn to fit yourself and make pattern adjustments according to your personalized fit. Then cut out and sew a bra!

Class 1: Bra Basics – parts of the bra, review of the kit and pattern, discussion and determination of underwire size, and selection of bra band size pattern. Homework: trace (if desired) and cut your bra pattern

Class 2: Cutting fabric and sewing your bra fitting band. Homework: Complete band construction

Class 3: Fitting the band. Pattern changes. Altering your band/cutting new band if necessary. Sewing band in washable thread (not included in kit) may be handy. Homework: complete revisions to band pattern and band. Trace and cut pattern and fabric for cups.

Class 4: Sewing your cup size and adding to your fitting band. Use washable thread to sew cups in.

 Homework: complete cup sewing

Class 5: Final fitting of bra mockup. Modeling in front of the group. The purpose of this is to not only learn how to fit yourself, but also the basics of fitting others so that as you change sizes or want to make a bra for a friend or family member you have the skills you need. Complete changes to pattern. Cut final bra in fabric.

 Homework: complete bra cutting and begin sewing.

Class 6: Complete bra, modeling session in front of the group. What’s next? How about some panties?

 Homework: create beautiful bras!

Kit: Class kit from Porcelynne. There are enough fabrics to make at least 2 bras in this kit (more depending on size and recuts in class).

Supply list: Will be sent upon registration. You should plan to bring your machine and basic sewing supplies starting week 2. A few machines will be available for use.

For the first night, you will need to bring:

• A measuring tape, see-through ruler, curved ruler and pencil, and calculator for drafting the panty (pattern paper is included in fee).  

For the second night, you will need to bring: 

• Your sewing machine, knit fabric that will stretch from 30% to 100% over its original width. Good choices include cotton jersey, cotton spandex, bamboo knits, Modal and nylon/spandex

• A small amount of fabric for gusset lining. Good choices include cotton jersey, organic cotton knit or bamboo. Synthetic knits are not recommended. 

• Lingerie elastic for legs: ¼”, 3/8”, or 5/16” wide. (Lingerie elastic has a soft, fuzzy back)

• Lingerie elastic for the waist: 3/8” to ¾” wide

• Lace edging, appliques or other stretch trims as desired.

• Matching polyester thread, silk pins, fabric cutting shears, marking tools, seam ripper, and ballpoint needles for your machine.

This corset making class offers intermediate sewers and budding designers the opportunity to begin their journey in creating a custom corset to their own measurements.

In this class you will learn how to fit a corset mock-up and build a corset using the double layer construction technique. This includes inserting a busk (optional), measuring for and choosing bones, marking and setting grommets. The class starts with drawing a pattern from measurements, making a mock-up and fitting it with the teachers guidance, transferring the changes to the original pattern (so you can make your next corset without a fitting partner) and putting the corset together. 

This will be a hands-on class, with all supplies (except busk, outer fashion fabric and lining) included in the cost of the class. You must have knowledge of sewing to take this class, and should understand garment construction.

Students must register in advance.

Traditional techniques of communicating your design intent are still used to create fashion illustrations that represent and illustrate your concept and ideas. The 10 head Croquis technique is one of many utilized to represent the body. This technique is the most widely used one in the fashion industry. In this section the class will be using traditional mediums of pencils and tracing paper to generate these foundational illustrations that represent the human body.

Materials List; Tracing paper pad, Eraser, Mechanical pencil, Clear plastic ruler, 1/2” inch binder, clear page protectors.

This 2 day course gives an in depth approach to tambour beading and couture embellishments applied to haute couture fashion and high fashion for beginners. It will cover the tambour beading technique using silk organza, seed beads and bugle beads to cover the basic chain stitch and vermicelli design. The 2nd day will cover couture embellishments including ribbonwork, all techniques learned will be applied to a design.

Learn how to create a solid framework for beading using silk organza on a rotating frame. This technique can be applied to larger frames to bead panels for a garment.

The main focus is on the basic chain stitch using a tambour hook correctly set up for silk organza.

Learn how to create a secure knot and change direction.

Seed beads and bugle beads are used to start tambour beading with a variety of techniques including vermicelli.

Couture embellishments including ribbonwork are taught using a beading needle and thread to create a variety of texture and dimension with 3d beadwork, clusters, raised beadwork and brickwork for trims and edging.

Please remember although you will be learning in a mixed technique group, your class is tailored specifically to your progress.

Having trouble finding great menswear patterns? Have ideas of your own that you want to create? This class is designed for those students with a desire to create custom-made patterns for themselves or others. It starts with creating custom blocks for woven fabrics and continues from there. Projects are selected for lessons learned that can be utilized in other projects. Sewing experience is necessary for this class. Homework will be assigned each class. You can learn to make one of the 3 styles (we are working on a fourth) in the picture. Class fee includes the patterns for all three and enough lace, elastic and strap to complete one white bralette. You choose the style to make in class and you will also learn the sewing steps for the others. We will review how to choose other laces for enhancing your bralette wardrobe.

You will need to bring note taking material, your sewing machine, light colored or white polyester thread, silk pins, fabric cutting shears, disappearing marking pen, seam ripper, ballpoint needles for your machine, and a walking foot and/or roller foot. Those knowledgeable with overlock/serger will be offered the opportunity to use ours.

Take time out from the hectic holidays and create your own holiday treat. Learn to work with faux fur and create a fur caplet for the upcoming celebrations in this special workshop. Cutting fur can be messy but there is a trick to reducing the bits getting everywhere. Sewing it can be tricky too. Get the essentials of faux fur construction and create your own caplet. (You could also lengthen it for a full cape or shorten it for a collar.)

Workshop fee includes the pattern for the caplet. You will need to bring your sewing supplies which will include: a measuring tape, fabric weights or large washers, fabric cutting scissors, sewing machine, matching polyester thread, extra-long ball head pins or fabric clips, seam ripper, universal needles for your machine, and a walking foot. (A few machines will be available for use.) Fabric requirement: ½ to ¾ yd of faux fur and lining for caplet. Less if collar, more if longer cape. Students must register in advance.

Get ready to work your butt off (and cover it with some gorgeous custom made panties)! Using your measurements, you will draft a basic brief style panty, sew it up, and check the fit. You will also learn how to change your panty block to different styles and different stretch fabrics and stretch laces, how to determine the stretch ratios of knits, working with knits on your regular sewing machine, and the array of elastics used in panty design.

Workshop fee includes enough white knit fabric for one panty brief (bamboo for its eco-friendly, microbe resistant, and wicking properties), stretch lace for the waist, and picot edge elastic for the leg openings. For the first night, you will need to bring a measuring tape, see-through ruler, curved ruler and pencil. Bead Embroidery and Design Studio

Tambour beading is best described as a dance of the hands executed with the precision of the tango and the grace of the waltz. Since the 1880’s it has remained the favorite technique used by the Haute Couture Industry in Paris. Until recently the only place to learn the technique was at Lesage in Paris. This class offers a unique opportunity to learn the basics of Tambour Beading. The beginner class introduces students to the basic tools, supplies and techniques of Tambour Beading. After completing a professional certificate at Lesage in Paris instructor Robert Haven has taught tambour beading at his Bead Embroidery And Design Studio in Lexington KY. He has also taught the technique for fashion programs in San Francisco, Toronto as well as master classes around the US and in Mexico, Italy and England.

Instruction includes:

Dressing the frame, setting the hook, basic tambour stitch, applying beads in rows, applying sequins in rows, applying beads over sequins, surface chain stitch with floss, leaning sequins on beads, radiating pattern of sequins, and standing loops of seed beads.

Bra Basics lecture (everything you ever needed to know about bras and more!) Attendance is open to all but attendance at the lecture is highly encouraged for those who are attending the workshop. Information necessary for fitting and constructing your bra will be presented and you may be unable to finish if not in attendance.  

We will start with the basics of fit with Monica and each student will experience a personalized fitting session. Using the results of your fitting session, you will be guided to take a pattern and make the necessary adjustments to customize it just for you. Next you will learn about fabrics and findings and, with your new custom-made pattern in hand, take the first step in making a bra. You will leave class with your first bra cut-out, ready to sew! Fitting sessions will be in front of the group. The purpose of this is to not only learn how to fit yourself, but also the basics of fitting others so that as you change sizes or want to make a bra for a friend or family member you have the skills you need.

Ready, set, SEW!!! It’s time to put it all together! This day, you will be guided step-by-step by Monica through the construction of a bra. Learn the basics of construction, plus lots tips and tricks. Before you leave class there will be one more chance for another fitting session, this time to check the fit of your new pattern. Any additional adjustments can be made to your pattern at that time, and you will leave class with your pattern, enough materials for two more bras, and a completed new bra!

Come experience the magic of indigo and shibori. Indigo is an ancient dye made from plants. The dye has been used by cultures around the world to transform fabric into amazing shades of blue. Come and learn more about indigo and it's history. During our workshop, students will get the opportunity to dye items of their own using an all natural indigo vat and will learn various shibori techniques which is an ancient Japanese method of folding and clamping fabric to create beautiful designs and patterns.

Bring in three personal items* to transform including apparel or small home goods. Ideas include a pair of napkins, a t-shirt, pillowcase, a summer dress, linen pants, a scarf, a tote bag or a small table runner. Loved, gently used, or stained items are also a great choice.

*Note: Unfortunately large and heavy items such as bedding and rugs cannot be accommodated at this time and will not be dyed.

Check the labels of the items you wish to dye to be sure they are made from natural fibers such as cotton, linen or silk. Synthetic dyes do not dye as easily so avoid anything with polyester, acrylic, nylon, items with low amounts of spandex will be okay but may not dye evenly (can be interesting). Wear clothing that you do not mind getting a drip or two of indigo on.

Join us for 4 afternoons of exploring surface design of fabric. Each day we will learn 2-3 traditional embroidery stitches and in addition we will learn the following:

Monday: traditional Japanese shibori folding (resist) techniques and dyeing with currently trending indigo dye.

Tuesday: experimenting with fiber reactive dyes and Indonesian inspired batik (wax resist) techniques.
